A Self-Advocacy Guide for Teens with Learning Disabilities
Advocate for Yourself

    What is Self-Advocacy?

Self-advocacy is learning how to speak up for yourself and learning how to make your own
decisions about your own life.  It involves learning how to access information so that you can better understand things that you find interesting. It also involves finding out the where, who, and how to get support in reaching your future goals. It means knowing your rights and responsibilities. It is learning how to problem solve. It is listening to yourself and to others. It is learning from yourself and from others. It is knowing how to reach out to others when you need help and friendship.  It is a path to independence.
